Herpes Vaccines
The first vaccine to treat a human ailment was developed in 1796 by Dr. Edward Jenner in England who protected a child against  smallpox by inoculating him with cowpox virus. A better understanding of the human immune system has led to the development of other vaccines which have brought under control several major human diseases, including tetanus, polio and measles.  As of 1998 only  a total of 18 vaccines  have  proved functional to human beings.
Vaccines to control Herpes were first attempted in the 1950's. As of  1999, no vaccine has proved efficacy towards Herpes.

Vaccines now available
Just because they are available does not mean they work. None of them are approved for use in the US, and except for Skinner, none have had trials in the US

The Skinner Vaccine
as developed by its namesake GR Skinner of the U. of Birmingham, UK has undergone various trials over the past 15 years, is available for about $ 150 in England and although anecdotal data and open studies indicate a degree of  usefulness, the vaccine has yet to prove itself in a double blind - placebo controlled study.

Bulgarian Vaccine
- "Since 1975 over than 20,000 patients in Bulgaria have been immunized with whole herpes vaccines with good therapeutic effect.

This study reports on our experience with whole herpes simplex vaccines in Bulgaria for a period of 17 years. More than1,500 immunized patients with herpes ophtalmicus showed a reduction of the recovery period, reduced number of therecurrences and reduced risk of visual damage. More than 14,000 patients suffering from other forms of herpes diseases for a longer period showed reduced recovery period and recurrence frequency in over 95% of the cases.

09 - Vaccines: AurX, Inc.
AuRx has developed a vaccine for the prevention of both fever blisters and genital herpes which has a unique advantage over competitive products.   The AuRx vaccine has been genetically engineered to remove a potentially  ancer-provoking oncogene from the virus. This HSV-2 virus has been attenuated to prevent the production of lesions in both infected individuals as well as previously uninfected individuals. The company's website has several herpes related articles, worthwhile reading

03 -Vaccines: Cel-Sci Corp.
Studies with L.E.A.P.S. (Ligand Epitope Antigen Presentation System) peptide compounds for HSV have achieved promising in vivo results in modulating immune response.  For a HSV L.E.A.P.S. vaccine, the Company has a SBIR grant (Phase I) with the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

16 - Vaccine Ideas: Sindbis Virus
Development of a plasmid DNA expression vector system derived from Sindbis virus (a mosquito transmitted virus most best known for causing  horse encephalitis) indicate the potential usefulness of alphavirus-based vectors for DNA immunization in general and more specifically as a herpes simplex virus  vaccine.
