"angular chelitis"

I have for the last two weeks been suffering from this condition which is characterized by sort of an inflammation on the very corner of the mouth, where upper and lower lips meet. One may also develop cracks... It is often caused by fungi, I am scared that this may mean that I have HIV. I have so far always tested negative for HIV and have no new risk factors unless the tests don't discover some types of HIV, which always worries me. The thing is that I have never had this or much of any infection (other than HSV-2)before and am wondering what the heck is going on with me? I have asked my doc to check my CBC, thyroid hormone levels, etc......as I had given birth three months ago and may have low iron due to extremely heavy periods, etc... Has anyone heard of the possible association beween low iron and angular chelitis? I really hope that that is what is causing it rather than something sinister.

Angular chelitis (deep cracks at the corner of your mouth)is a condition that can be caused many things. Its also called perleche. HIV is only one cause. You tested negative for HIV. The chances that the test was wrong is very tiny. Don't let HIV paranoia override your common sense. So worry about other things first. It can be caused by an allergy (contact dermatitis),yeast infection (most common cause), a vitamin B deficiency (rare because all our foods are supplemented), an iron deficiency (also rare). Incidentally HSV can cause the same thing if that where the OB is. I get this all the time. It comes and goes on its own. I don't have an immunodeficiency. I don't even treat it, but if you're miserable you should get it treated. Howl
