"valium induced depression!!!"

WOW _- the valium worked well the few times I took it - calmed things down, helped me sleep -- but oh my word -- I had depression for two days after each time. BAD depression. Finally I called both my therapist (who says this is very common with valium) and my doctor (who called in Tranxene for me instead for episodic use, which I realize won't help my back at all -- major bummer, that was a useful side effect!!)
I am wondering if others have had this experience?? My mom apparently did also.
I've had some people suggest that this depression was there all along and valium made it show up by inhibiting my natural coping mechanisms... but even my therapist said, "that sounds awfully complex..." - -basically try the obvious answer first.
Other experiences? I think with this virus it's important that I get myself notched down a bit right now -- but the valium would certainly NOT be worth it!! I'd rather have my back hurt AND have an OB that deal with that depression.

thanks!

I think Valium can cause depression after taking it for a few days at least that's what I've heard. Valium is prett strong. See if your doctor will prescribe you something less potent like Ativan. It is in the same class as Valium but doesn't stay in your system as long. That is what I take and I don't seem to have a problem and I am prone to depression.

Thanks for the tip but I'm done with Benzodiazapenes. I took the valium for my back -- and for stress to some extent. But the depression it caused wasn't worth it. I took a tranxene a few weeks ago and it did the same thing. End of story - I'm done with those particular drugs.
So--my stressful situations are winding down -- and I have better ways of managing stress. I really don't need a tranquilizer at this point.
I have a friend who has had good luck with Ativan too. I'll keep that one in mind should the need ever arise again.

Thanks!

Late in chiming in, but anyway, I have taken valium in the past and had the exact reaction you ad, major depression, it only lasted a couple of days, but man were those long days...also, I had a procedure done and they gave me valium and I actually woke up crying...weird...

I just wanted to straighten you out on one very important point. 1 milligram of lorazepam (Ativan)is equivalent to 10 milligrams of valium(diazepam),so Ativan is a much stronger drug. It's shorter half-life only makes withdrawal symptoms occur more quickly and severely upon quitting the drug. I know from personal experience! After a year of taking 3 milligrams of Ativan a day, I quit--5 days later I went into grand mal seizures and ended up in intensive care. Don't be fooled by the low milligram dose of Ativan, it is a very powerful benzodiazapine--Avoid it if possible!

Valium is a CNS depressant, just like alcohol. Withdrawal symptoms will be similar.

Just to add here, that i tried valium to help me cut
down on alcohol, yep it worked, I did cut down to 1 + half literes
of cider via taking 5-10ml of valium per night but again as others have
unfortunatley experienced, i had severe
deppresion via taking valium + i felt so low + tired
during the day, it was horrible : o(

I will never touch the valium again!!!
I will cut down the cider without medication : o)

Also just to add, it slowed my heart rate down +
made it go irregular when i woke up at 3 oclock
in the afternoon: o(

Please be carefull when or if u take valium.
