The major reason Kinky Friedman's work appeals to me is he balances cynicism/alienation with a gentle tenderness the belies a sensitive soul. He is very smart, but doesn't take himself too seriously. He says people get much more out of his books than he puts into them.
A K Friedman's book is about moods, and situations feelings and reflections on life. The characters move from novel to novel like a reparatory troupe gaining depth and making references to other books/cases without needing the reader to need to have "been there" to get in on the "inside" jokes. The Kinkster's books can make you homesick for New York even if you never lived there and are enough to cause even myself to consider giving Texas a second chance.
Kinky says you either have to be very smart or very stupid to enjoy his books-this may be true but the joy isn't in the mystery, it's in the trip you get to take with interesting people. You don't need to breath the cigar smoke or get dirty to share in the adventures. In all it makes you glad to be part of the human experience.
